The family of William Matthew Barber is deeply saddened to announce his passing on April 24th, 2012. Bill is survived by his sisters, Kay Pritchard and her sons Ken (Alice), Kelvin (Ruth), Glenn (Shannon) and Kelly (Lori); Winnie Kozak and her son Corwin (Cathy); brother, Alex Barber (Kim) and sons Darrell (Carol), Brian (Wendy) and Darwin (Jodi); sisters, Flo Dolinshaw (Bob) and daughters Deanna (Ken) and Lisa (Greg); Eileen Tkachuk and her children Allanna (Brad) and Brent (Sarah); as well as 31 great-nieces and nephews and 8 great-great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Matthew and Annie Barber; uncle, Dave Barber; sister, Gladys Barber; sister-in-law, Eileen Barber; brothers-in-law, John Kozak and Tom Pritchard; and niece, Gaylene Middleton.

Bill was born at Whitewood, SK and received his education at Beynes School. There are many happy memories of growing up on the family farm. In 1960, the family moved to Regina where he was employed by SaskPower, NIS Construction and Wappell Construction. The family farm was maintained until 1967 but he continued to raise cattle as a hobby farmer. In 2007, he retired to Mankota, SK where he spent his time driving in the country enjoying nature, hunting gophers, working on his house and yard, and helping on his nephew’s ranch. Bill was a private person who worked hard and went through life quietly with honesty and integrity. He was always there to lend us a hand and asked little of us in return. Family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed the children.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 12th, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Whitewood, SK. Pastors Wilma and Brian Woods will officiate. The family will lay his cremated remains to rest in the family plot at the Whitewood Cemetery. We will return to the Anglican Parish Hall for lunch and fellowship and welcome friends to join us. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s name may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Sask., 279 3rd Ave. N., Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8.

Albert Joseph Kalaman was born on the farm on January 7th 1929, the eldest of seven children born to James and Elizabeth (nee Kiss) Kalaman. Albert attended St. Luke school until grade eight, after which he worked on the farm. In the fifties he went to work at various logging camps in Alberta. He also worked for the rural telephone company. He belonged to U.G.G. and the Sask Wheat Pool committees. Albert moved into Whitewood from the farm in 1995, where he became involved in many activities, some of which were horseshoes, cribbage and church. With his walker in tow he attended many events in town such as the dinner theatres, baseball games, concerts and of course hockey, hardly ever missing a game. Albert loved to talk, and a simple trip to the restaurant or the store could seemingly last for hours, but it definitely made the day interesting. Albert truly loved his sports. He was fortunate enough to attend a Blue Jay game in Toronto, and a trip to the Brier in Regina. He also went to Niagara Falls and the African Lion Safari in Ontario where he rode an elephant; there was never a dull moment around this guy. He lived in his own home up to the day he went into the hospital, still able to cook, clean and drive his own car. It was easy to spot him with his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs or Saskatchewan Roughrider licence plate on the front of his car.

Albert was predeceased by his parents James and Elizabeth (nee Kiss) Kalaman; his sister Ethel Tosczak and his brother John Kalaman. He leaves to cherish his memory: his siblings Irene (Martin) Dittrick of Edmonton, Don Kalaman, Wayne Kalaman and Shirley (Phil) Phayre all of Whitewood; brother-in-law Bob Tosczak of Manitoba; sister-in-law, Pat Kalaman of Burns Lake, BC and many nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral service was held April 25, 2012 at St. Mary's Anglican Church with the Rev. Brian Woods and the Rev. Wilma Woods officiating. Edna Shepherd and Ernie Briggs read scripture and Shirley Phayre read a poem. The eulogy was given by Lyle Miller. The organist Hertha Briggs and the choir led in the hymns, "Softly and Tenderly", "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Amazing Grace". Soloist, Darren Kalaman, sang "How Great Thou Art" at the service and the "23rd Psalm" at the interment. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Domoslai, Glen Robertson, Howard Balon, Bill Scott, Lyle Miller and Ed Heinrich. Interment followed in the Forrest Farm Cemetery with members of the Whitewood Orioles and Jets serving as active pallbearers, Matthew Beutler, Colton MacPherson, Jared Thompson, Leland Pearson, Matthew Wushke and Owen Bachtold.
